This is possibly the most common question I’ve gotten over the years and possibly the most mis-used terms in the world of record-making. Everyone who knows me knows I love to give a long and thorough answer. There’s definitely a short, medium and long answer to this question. If you want the long answer (complete with a history lesson); check out this [link] video where I explain in far too much detail. Now, for the short answer: Mixing is the process of taking the individual instruments and vocals that have been recorded and MIXING them together. The art of mixing is shaping those individual elements to combine into a single waveform that represents the intention of the artist, producer, songwriter, mixer, or anyone else who’s in charge of the mix. If you can play a song on your phone or radio : It was mixed. We refer to mixing as an art because there’s almost infinite variables that can be affected when mixing a multi-track recording. Every tone of every instrument could be manipulated (although that certainly does not mean that it SHOULD be). The relative level of every instrument and voice can be manipulated. This is the part of the process that determines the final sound of the record. This is the part you should focus on. Mastering is the process of taking a final mix and preparing it for release. In the context of a project, this means making sure that each mix can stand next to each other as a cohesive body of work. This can involve shaping the overall tone or level of each song and also adjusting the spacing between songs. For a single, this mostly means shaping the mix to ensure that it will be cohesive with other songs in the genre. Occasionally, mastering is called upon to save a mix that is sub-par for some reason or another. Occasionally, that actually works but it should be looked at as a worst-case scenario and not a desired mode of operation. The goal is a mix that sounds like the record you want.

Every song is different and every artist has their own method. It’s better to book a little bit more time than you might think you need to allow for new ideas or unforeseen challenges. Some artists prefer to book several smaller sessions and work on a project over time as their schedule, energy, or budget allows. Some artists like to book a large amount of time and complete a record in one session. Contact us for help in figuring out a plan of action that suits you.

Yes, All sessions include an engineer.

We allow cancellations or re-scheduling with 24 hour notice. This must be done through our automated system through the confirmation email you received when booking.

If efficiency is important to you, it can be helpful to have a plan for what you would like to accomplish in a session and even the order you would like to complete the tasks. It’s always good to have any files you need for your session prepared and accessible. If you need to export files from your DAW, for example, It’s best to do that ahead of time. We are flexible to all ways of working and all personality types but if you want to be efficient we recommend : Organization, planning, and practice.

We can load up almost any standard removable media. Any cloud hosting service like Icloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc will be good for us as long as you can send a link. Make sure google drive links have permissions. Make sure Wetransfer files aren’t expired. It’s always best practice to download any files sent to you from your collaborators and bring them yourself. It can be risky to assume that they will still be there if you wait until you’re at the studio to access them. It is also best practice to verify any files you are sent whenever possible. We are unable to refund studio time that is unable to be used due to file issues so we recommend doing whatever is required to verify that your files are available and usable. Please contact us in advance if you have any questions about files so that we can assist you prior to the session. We don’t want to waste your time or our time!

All mixing and mastering pricing and turnaround will be agreed upon at the start of the job but our current target is around 10 days.

Please do. Tag us so we can share!

Our standard session rate allows for 5 people in attendance. Please reach out in advance if your team is larger than this so we can adjust accommodations and pricing if needed.

Unfortunately, due to our diverse clientele, city ordinances, and the policies of the building owner : All smoking must take place outside. The outside area is fairly private, quite nice and safe.

LGBTQ Friendly

I designed Element Sound to be a place where artists, writers, producers, and other creatives with audio needs can be completely comfortable and focused. There are no distractions here. The entire building is yours, from the lobby to the studio to the restrooms. I think it’s very important to feel like you can be yourself when you’re creating. I wanted a place that encouraged that feeling.

Check out our Equipment page to see the full list of what we use to produce, record, edit, mix and master.
